It’s been a real pleasure to have been coached by John for nearly 10 years now. He came highly recommended from a fellow club member, and I can see why!
I’m in my mid 50s, and I started with John in my mid 40s. Right from the start, John looked through my previous training and competing history: he quickly diagnosed that he could get me training fewer hours, and could get me riding faster. He was right on both counts.
I’m a pretty focused trainer and competitor, and I love the range of sessions that John gives me, along with the rise and fall across the season. John has been very patient, and focused too. He’s coached me to many PBs in 10 and 25 mile TTs, so that I’m perfectly happy competing against riders less than half my age. He’s also coached me to compete just fine in BC cat 3 races, BMCR age groups and to qualify for UCI age group masters events, along with Chase the Sun and week long jollies in the French and Italian Alps. Once we’ve set our mind to something, I’m confident that John can set the programme, and send me out well prepared.
I’ve learned massively to trust the process, and to trust John in that process. He’s a proper gent; when I had a serious injury, he suspended my fees while I was unable to ride at all, and then he coached me gently back to form. He’s not afraid to tell me off when I need it, nor to give me a metaphorical arm around the shoulders when I need it. I’m still riding faster than I ever was before I started with John, despite being nearly 10 years older. If you want a straight talking coach, and if you’re prepared to put in the graft, then John’s the man to take you forward in your cycling goals.
