"My power output had shot
up by 40 watts throughout the Winter. I now feel stronger and better on a
bike than I've ever done before in my life!"
"When I approached John and explained where I thought I had difficulties he decided to accept me as a challenge. He put me through a test and identified where and why my riding had suffered. I have been given challenging training to perform back at home on the Wirral which appeared to be easy on paper - or so I thought! However I found them all hard. Don't get me wrong, John was not trying to catch me out but had simply identified where I was wasting my energy and efficiency. It was so simple! Later after other tests, my riding skills have improved, to my amazement. I have noticed that I am putting far less effort in to get my power output and my speed is a lot faster. Locally I have a Time Trial circuit where I would usually notice a headwind mid way round that would slow me right down. I went on this circuit on a windy day recently and yep you guessed it I went faster, the wind had only a very limiting effect on my ride and I could not believe it. Even at an early stage of training I was about 5mph faster than normal! John has been instrumental in offering lots of support and guidance. He is a dedicated coach and ensures you understand your targets and can complete them in manageable chunks. I have achieved every one of the challenges John has set. He stresses how hard they will be and what he expects of you and you are never alone. In the matter of weeks since I started being coached by John my HR has dropped, my power output is far greater and I feel GOOD!"
MJ - Chester Road Club I was previously with another well respected coach who did wonders for me in the first 2 years of my cycling `career`. I went from nothing to doing decent rides.
The last few years I became static and
didn't improve, in fact since 2003 I have been going backwards a little
and have lost some speed. I lost motivation to train and race and I did
not finish in a number of races that I had entered. I had become totally
drained and didn't enjoy it. I was more focussed on what other people were
doing in training and races than myself and had lost the plot to put it
bluntly.
Simon Beldon - Leeds After only a few weeks of coaching from John I have noticed a definate improvement in my strength on the bike. John's weekly plans are tough but enjoyable and it's nice to be coached by someone who's been there and got the t-shirt! John is supportive and encouraging and is a great motivator when it comes to getting the best out of a cyclist - you can tell he loves being a coach.
MB - Lancashire Road Club This winter John changed my training and added gym work to my programme. It has fired me up, I cannot believe the benefits and motivation the weights and rowing have given me. It has been tough but I feel an all round improvement in myself and I am looking forward to the benefits now that I am concentrating more on the bike. George Nowland I came to John after having been disillusioned and burnt out after a couple of seasons with a previous coach. I find Johns training plans and philosophies ‘a breath of fresh air’ With John I know where we are, where we are going and what we are trying to achieve and why, every time I sling my leg over a Bike. Feedback I desperately wanted but never had before. Powerful motivation indeed! Mark Marsland Before a met john I had no structure to my training but now it's a different story. I get a detailed plan every week which is easy to understand and has a lot of different variations of training which really excite you knowing that these rides are going to target different areas of your training and in the end make you the best rider you can be.
John has a love for coaching and is a very
powerful motivator and will dedicate his time to know you as a
person and a rider and help you reach the goals you have always wanted. John is more than a coach he is a friend and well worth every penny. Top Coach !!

It was billed as the
biggest pool based Triathlon in the South and I admit I was nervous !!No
need to be mate - I won the age category and came 55th overall !
Great result ... Although really awful conditions ..
No other coach would have have inspired me
the way you have John. I know a
few that would have binned the likes of me, and others the like of me only

I
Six months on, I just wanted to say
thanks for the ramp test/consultation and subsequent plan. The
afternoon at yours for the test and discussion got me fired up for a good
winters training, knowing that all the sessions had a structure to them.
The goal was to have a good early season before the baby arrived at the
end of April. So far so good with a top 10 at the Circuit of the
Dales (not bad for 90kg!) and an open win. I certainly feel that I
have stepped up a level from last year so thanks for your help with that Just under a year ago a Club mate of mine recommended John as a suitable coach – we’d both had the same Coach previously and had similar issues but I was assured that nothing like that happened with John. The first thing that strikes you about John is his utter enthusiasm for our sport of cycling. During John’s outpouring of enthusiasm he said to me “Let me coach you and you’ll go faster than you’ve ever gone before”. Yawn, yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all before - I’m in my mid-fifties and way past my prime. OK, so I get my first three month plan bang on time and I have loads of queries. I fire off an email and settle down for a couple more weeks of rest while John comes back to me. Wrong. Within a couple of hours back comes the clarification. Yeah, yeah, seen it all before – get that first reply off quickly and then slowly let it drift. Wrong – it’s been like that all year. In 1985 I set my life time best of 59:20 for the 25mile TT. Twenty-three years on and I’ve gone faster with a 58:20. We – oh, it’s always “we” and never ever “you” by yourself – just missed out on a life time best at 10 miles. But, hey, it’s a big call to go faster than you did thirty-odd years ago!! OK, so I’ve had to do the graft and go out in the wind, rain and cold. But without the plan, the patience, the cajoling and the know-how from John it wouldn’t have happened. Top bloke who lives up to his promises. Dave Wentworth Testimonial - Before I met John I had no previous guidance on training and admittedly a limited knowledge on how to train effectively. After a few phone calls to several coaches, I decided to choose John to work with, a great decision on my part! He has helped give me a much greater focus for training by enabling me to see the purpose behind every session, as a power user I have noticed my power steadily increasing week upon week. Within the 3 months I have worked with John I have been through a lot, within 2 weeks of starting the structured programme I broke my jaw, I let him know and as soon I was ready to train again, he adapted my programme straight away to suit my new needs. I went on to place 2nd in the BUSA Hill climb with power figures I could only of dreamed of 3 months before hand. I cannot recommend John enough and can't wait till next year. Thanks! Michael Smith
Having ridden L’Etape du Tour in 2005 and Mt Ventoux in 2008, I knew that I could ride single days in the “Big Mountains”. Six consecutive days, though, was a completely different matter. John’s focused training plan enabled me to improve my maximum sustainable power – something that would be very important on climbs of up to 23km ! Just as importantly, John’s subliminal objective setting ability helped me start the ride with full confidence. I’d recommend John’s coaching to anyone who has cycling goals. I contracted with John on his incredibly good-value 3-month bespoke plans and, as I said at the start of this endorsement, I’m coming back for more ! What testimony could be better than that ?
