'I cycled for a while at club level when I was younger, but moved on to other things aged 20 or so. An eighteen-year bicycle separation finally came to an end a few years ago when a few rides on a hired mountain bike on holiday really gave me the bug again. I spent the next 12 months getting fit on the bike and then joined a local cycling club. I dipped my toe in the racing scene the following year and decided pretty early on to focus on time trials. Having a family now and a full time job requires my available training time to be as beneficial as possible. I had been dabbling with training tips from this book and that over the past couple of years and despite this hit and miss approach I have gotten my times for the 10 and 25 down to 23:27 and 1:00:40. This has been without any clear plan or structure to my training, but for 2008 I decided I would be better off finding a coach. I remember reading an article about John in the comic and decided to follow it up. Despite the fact that he stays 200 miles from me I had a good feeling that he would be a good choice just by chatting to him on the phone. His enthusiasm is infectious and after my first ramp test and consultation I knew I had made the correct choice. I have been on John’s portfolio since November 2007 and have been enjoying the training and feeling the benefits since – roll on the new TT season.'
