"Approximately 8 years ago I was fairly unfit, spending loads of time at work, working away and staying in hotels (3 course meals every night). My weight rocketed and my fitness deteriorated so I decided to do something about it. I purchased a cheap MTB from halfords and haven’t looked back since. Following this initial purchase my fitness increased and weight decreased and further purchases of better mountain bikes were made !! Having competed in trailquests & enduro events I decided that I buy a road bike to supplement my MTB training. To be honest since then I haven’t looked back. I joined my local road cycling club 3 years ago and took part in one or two club 10’s. In 2006 I took part in a few more events including a few opens on my standard road bike with clip on bars. I really enjoyed the competitive edge and decided that I’d take it a bit more seriously in 2007. At the end of 2006 I rode solo and unsupported from Lands End to John O’Groats. This is something I’d been thinking about for a few years so decided I’d ‘get it out of the way’ before I started racing in 2007 (my web-site www.scottwestwood.co.uk has info about the trip). The guys and gals in my cycling club gave me loads of encouragement and the confidence to race in 2007. I became more aero with a proper TT bike etc. I’ve been really pleased with my first season especially given the fact that the training has been fairly unstructured. I regularly achieved a top 10 placing in open events and surpassed all of my goals that I’d set my self. Our club (Walsall Roads CC) regularly won team prizes and I was proud to be part of the winning team. A summary of my achievements is given below. Hopefully John will point me in the right direction to get the bit extra out of me that will see me finish higher in the events that I plan to take part in next year.

Achieved club gold standard for 10,25,50 and 100mile TT
Achieved fastest 50 and 100 of the season (fastest by a club member)
Won the club hill climb trophy
2nd in club 10 championship
2nd in club handicap

PBs as follows:
10 TT, 21:45 (4th place overall)
25 TT, 55:21. I did do a 52:50 towards the end of the season but the event was later discounted as the course was deemed illegal (variation of the J5/8)
50 TT, 1:57:39 (on a sporting course)
100 TT, 4:05. First attempt at a ‘100’. Finished 6th overall (welsh championship)
