''As a serving soldier, fitness has always been a big part of my lifestyle. I cycled for a couple of years as a Junior but grew (height and weight!) and discovered rugby and beer as a 17 year old! That said, I have returned to cycling after nearly 20 years of playing rugby (Second Row or Number 8) at a fairly tidy level (incl a season in the French 2nd Division in 92-93). A series of injuries in 05 finally led me to hang up my boots. The search for ways to keep fit other than running led me back to the bike.

Cycling was also recommended as a good post-hernia op recovery that started in Jul 06. Maintaining motivation through last winter led me to committing to a few TTs in 07 which went well. I managed a 24’ 48” for a 10 and a 1 00 16 on the F1 in Sep. Gutting but not bad after only 14 months on the bike! All in all, it was a great season returning to a sport I had fond memories of.

Season 08 will be fantastic with John’s guidance and motivation. I am looking forward to losing the weight that was hard gained in various gyms around the world in search of rugby excellence (got about 5kgs to go…!). For some odd reason, I am focussed on 25s. I will have a crack at a 50 mile TT this coming season but my main targets for 08 are:

  • Break the hour
  • Be a consistent sub hour rider
  • Get a sub 58
  • Ride a sub 2 15 for a 50''
