'Having raced as a junior I took about 14 years off, got fat (14 1/2
stone), got married and had a family. In 2004 at 32 my wife was moaning
about me not being the trim guy she'd met. So, just to get a few pounds
off (and not being a gym lover) I dug out the old riding iron and started
going out a bit. I quickly became addicted and was soon riding every day.
My weight tumbled, down to 10.5 stone in less than 6 months.
I'd only wanted to lose some lard, but as I got fitter I started to think
about racing again.
I joined a club and was given some good advice by a new acquaintance, a
certain John Morgan. I followed the tidbits that John had passed my way,
albeit a bit haphazardly. This led to some reasonable results that
certainly exceeded my expectations. However, as I got to know other
riders John's advice became diluted and ultimately forgotten, with the
result that my steady improvement petered out. I have been in a plateau
for two years. I know that there are weaknesses in the approach that I
have had to training since 2005 and that there are areas of my engine that
need some well thought out attention.
I have every confidence that John is going to wring every ounce of
performance/pain/sweat/speed (pick your favourite) out of me. There's a
great deal of work to do, but I'm already looking forward to next season
with renewed hunger and the firm belief that it's going to be my best.'
